As the man, his dog
There are books that strikes you on one side, is tied up and puts it to the end no more out of hand. Then there are books that are best to start further back and in which one reads only gradually. One understands then little by little, what the book offers us as a whole. One such book is “How man be so dog” by Dr. Sophia Yin. Here’s the simple dog owner’s best to start first with part 3, because he gets there, described in detail and full of ideas, how can he teach his dog. Later, he will then devote itself to the theory in Part 1 and 2 and learn a lot about his own dogs.
Sophia Yin is a professor of animal behavior and pet trainer and has taught at Keller and Marian Bailey. It describes in four parts theory and practice of successful animal training and dog training. The individual parts of the book are:
Part 1: Dogs understand
Part 2: The science of learning
Part 3: The Five-minute guide to good dog behavior
Part 4: The most common dog problems solved in five minutes
In Part 3 and 4 of us are actually given concrete recommendations on how our dogs – are popular, of course, not in five minutes, patience and observation! – To train and educate. The normal dog owners can learn much and benefit greatly.
Parts 1 and 2 are rather of theoretical interest and help are mainly animal trainers in their daily work. Be explained as classical and operant conditioning, behavior modification methods, the value of the rewards and the pitfalls of punishment, and troubleshooting. Amusing is that not only lists examples of dog training, but we also learn “the behavior of dog (or horse, cat, rat …)” to modify.
The book can provide practical help for dog owners, but especially for his animal trainer, a good increase especially glossary, a bibliography and a glossary of its scientific merit. Disturbing is that by various, not to confuse the actual content associated extra chapter (votes to the book, dedications, acknowledgments, an appendix with a report on “the” chicken training camp and interviews and reports about Keller and Marian Baley) the naive readers more. Animal trainer and behaviorist, however, just be happy about this extra chapter.
